Okay, full disclosure: I have never read any MM romance of the sci-fi/tentacle variety even though I have been curious about it. So when I stumbled across this one, I knew I had to give it a shot. And boy, am I glad I did. This book was just so much fun and I can't wait to dive into the rest of the series.
It's been a while since I laughed this much, no joke. River is an absolute blast and I love him to pieces. He's a hardcore sci-fi nerd who talks a mile a minute and is pretty much an excitable puppy on steroids. Kai is a bit more straight-laced, to say the least, but I love these two together so very much. The rest of the cast was equally entertaining, I'm happy to say. Characters can make or break a book for me and safe to say, this cast made it epic for me. They were just too much fun.
I know that the next few books in the series will continue to focus on Kai and River, which I am not complaining about at all because - as I said - I love them. But I did spot some teases for possible future pairings already (Mal and Benji, obviously. But please give Evan an alien boo as well, please and thank you).
As for the plot, it's undoubtedly over the top, at times ridiculous, always hilarious, very entertaining, with just enough intrigue, action, and suspense to balance everything out. I'm about to dive into book 2 so hard, I'm not even kidding. That ending left me needy for more. (Also very ready for more spicy scenes of the tentacle variety, hell yeah!)
This book is a joy to read. I had a blast with it and I regret not having found it sooner because I have a feeling Chloe Archer will quickly become a favorite author of mine. On to the next!
