Can't Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne

5.0

Books and tea! What more can you ask for? Maybe a little romance. Reyna and Kianthe quit their jobs and run away to the countryside to open a combination tea and bookshop. Their gentle love keeps this a soft, lighthearted read, even when they are dealing with the town’s dragon problem or negotiating trade routes for their shop. This book was just TEA-rrific! Get it!? Seriously though, it's fun, cosy, practical, and filled with an abundance of tea puns.

Comparing this book to Travis Baldree’s “Legends and Lattes” is very accurate, however, I believe this book deserves its own special recognition as well. There were so many great aspects to love (besides the puns).

Reyna and Kianthe are the perfect sapphic couple! Their personalities complement each other very well to where we can clearly see who each of them is. When the book starts, they have already been dating for a while. This allows for a different portrayal of love. One that is gentle, sustaining and evolving through new adventures together. It was very refreshing not to have the two main love interests pinning after each other every other scene. And the lack of spicy scenes (which lately fantasy books all seem to over-emphasize) was also really nice. Their established relationship also means there was not a lot of new-love drama, which I find can get annoying sometimes. Instead, the book focused on the actual event of following their dreams and opening the shop.

Personally, I really enjoyed how practical Throne made it. When the two girls ran away, of course, there was the looming threat of their former bosses, but there were other concerns as well. The two had to figure out finances, suppliers, trade routes, permits, etc. It made the story feel all that more realistic despite taking place in a high fantasy setting.

Best of all, it is a series. So there are plenty more tea and books to come. And hopefully, the next one won’t LEAF us hanging. … Leaf … like tea leaves. Okay. I’m done! I promise Kianthe’s tea puns are better than mine. Most of them at least. :)
