i really enjoyed this book and i definitely get the hype that i see all over social media.
i was planning on giving this book a 3/5 stars because the first 80% of the book i found to be very cringey and eye roll inducing, specifically the inner monologues of Violet (she sounds like she’s 15/16 years old rather than 20) as well as any of the romance scenes until chapter ~31/32. the final 20% of this book was a crazy and wild ride that bumped it back up to a 4/5 stars and has me wholeheartedly invested in the characters. something about the writing changed for the better, especially the way that Violet and xaden act around each other. i will absolutely be reading iron flame when it comes out in november.
i don’t really know what changed in the writing, but if you’re struggling like i was — stick it out. it is totally worth it. the entire concept of going to flight school to learn to fly dragons and channel magic is enamoring to me. despite what i said about the inner monologue of violet, i did enjoy reading about her time at Basgiath and her growth from someone so timid to essentially a bad bitch. she grows on you as a main character very quickly, not even to mention how most other characters are extremely loveable besides the obvious enemies that come along.
