Tempting the Beast by Lora Leigh
2.0
Leigh can write sex. She cranks the heat up high and leaves you roasting the whole book. And the Breeds idea is interesting enough to set up a series. Actually, Leigh was sometimes clever in working lion traits into the story. So if you're looking for some sci-fantasy erotica, like the idea of animal-ish mating, and can ignore shaky writing holding the whole thing together, look no further.
Unfortunately, the bad cliches/romance/writing that leaked out in between the sex was jarring.
Complaints:
There almost nothing in this story but sex. We get it already. I'd say 80% of the book was sex.
Callan was maybe likeable, but the way he talked/thought was so ridiculous. He was like a robot varying between "alpha-asshole" and "super-emo." The whole domination bit was overblown.
Merinus wasn't much better. Her bravado and constant cracks (e.g.Lion-O) were annoying. The beginning set her up as a tough little journalist who doesn't groom overly much and has a ton of brothers (aka stubborn). That's all the characterization Leigh gives you for the rest of the book.
I'm not even going to go into their "love."
And there were so many inconsistencies running rampant:
One second Merinus's crying before, during, and after sex (rape?)- the next, she's thinking how much she loved it. Make up your mind.
Throughout the book, Callan goes on and on about how not into sex he was before Merinus (lab perverted it for him), then out of nowhere, he has a "sensual devices" collection at home and keeps lube at his hideout house. WTF
Merinus is fighting tooth and nail not to give into her arousal. Literally the next line, Callan shows up and she's purring like a kitty. Kinda explained via the mating thing, but still really ridiculous.
Callan sometimes has a southern accent...what?
The bad guy has a ridiculous and cliche "gloating speech/info dump scene" that was so out of place.
Basically, every time I shrugged off the last awkward bit of bad writing, another came flying along.
Final bit: Cover's mildly hilarious. It maybe could work if Merinus didn't look so CGI/weird. It's actually fabulous compared to the next book [b:The Man Within|348660|The Man Within (Breeds, #2)|Lora Leigh|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1254619054s/348660.jpg|338937], where the guy has a woman's body from the boobs down.
