The Alchemyst by Michael Scott

2.0

I’m well outside the target audience.

Took on too much. I appreciate all the nods to history, both factual and mythological, but I found very little else to recommend the book. One might question how many of the references young teens would recognize. A dedicated fan might be spurred to further reading.

Otherwise, it’s one long run from targeting danger for 2 kids who didn’t ask for it, and a huge learning curve to boot. The characters were either running or having information tossed at them. There was no time for development or to learn to sympathize with the 2 main characters. The culminating action was much too long and drawn out, with the effect of becoming boring.

I read a Rick Riordan book several years ago, which followed a mythology I’m interested much more closely. The smaller subject knowledge base resulted in a more interesting plot. However, I liked Scott’s tone more than Riordan’s for a lack of snark.
