Unnatural Volume 1: Awakening by Mirka Andolfo

3.0

REREAD 2020

I picked up the 3rd and last album in this series a little while ago and started reading it, and realized I didn't remember anything, so I started a reread.
I'm glad I did that, for I found that I did enjoy vol 1 a lot. It was a bit slower than I remembered - which isn't all that weird when you know what's going to happen AND am having a sick-day.
The lack of a tail still annoyed me, and there still seemed to be a lot going on that didn't really make sense. Like why do the thing with her friend when they did it? There seem to be a lot of randomg ''horrors'' just to make things interesting at this point.

So I heard about this comic through the artist Stjepan Sejic, and seeing as I am a big fan of his, I just had to check it out. I couldn't prioritize it, though, with life as it was, but now things have shifted and I really believe things will be better, and so I allowed myself the expense of buying this comic.

It was... an intense start to the series.
You're hit in the face right away with this world that is like our own but also so wrong. It has taken everything bad from our world and blown it up, showing what future we may have if things are allowed to progress the way it had been going for these last few years.
This aspect of the story is really scary, to be honest, and really got to me.

Then there is the main story, which I found interesting but also kind of really weird.
There is a lot going on, and some of it seem somewhat forced, but I may look differently at it when reading vol 2 - have to check if that is available in English!

The main thing that got me to this comic was the art. When Sejic say some art is great, I have to give it a chance, and he didn't disappoint.
I found the art beautiful and full of character and personality. It was somewhat goofy at times, which depleted the seriousness of the story, but that may also have been on purpose to not make the volume too heavy.

But, I did have one big problem:
Tails! Where were the tails?!? This is a world filled with humanoid animals - which I love, by the way! - and many of them were so well drawn - although some were really animalistic and others were really humanoid, and that was kind of weird. I wish there was more of a consistency on that point - but we seldom saw the tails. There were a lot of male characters with no hint of a tail what so ever - unless they were naked - but I do not believe they could fit a big, fluffy tail into those pants and still have such a nice ass, I'm telling yah!

So yeah, my big problem with this comic was the lack of tails...
