Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off by Darci Hannah

3.0

It’s Christmastime in Beacon Harbour, a small town in Michigan, where the Beacon Bakeshop is in full swing, baking Christmas treats. Lindsey, the bakeshop’s owner and main baker, has her recipes all ready when a Cookie Bake-Off is announced where a famous food critic will be the judge. This has everyone in the competition on edge, so much so, a murder takes place. Now, the competition is off and Lindsey finds herself putting on her detective hat to help solve the murder. This was a cute, cozy mystery with an engaging story with compelling writing. Even though the murder was the sole focus of the novel, the reader didn’t exactly care who was behind it. Sure, finding out who it was and the lead up to it was exciting, and the reader enjoyed reading it, but the reader just liked the vibes of this story. The Christmas air, the baking treats, it was all just very joyous. Also, the mysterious Mrs. Nichols was a lot of fun. The reader liked this little sprinkle of Christmas magic. It didn’t feel over the top, or that it was doing too much, it was just the right amount of disbelief to give this a fun feel. The plot was straightforward and for the most part easy to follow. What made it a little hard to follow was the amount of characters that were in this. It felt like there were so many characters who all sounded the same. There was Felicity, who the reader got confused with Ginger because they all just sounded the same. The characters were too generic to remember who was who. The main characters were alright, but again, they felt a little flat for main characters. Overall, this Christmas story was cozy despite having some less than stellar characters, in the end it was all about the vibes.
