A Wife's Fantasy by Cesare Ancona

3.0

Cesare Ancona, A Wife's Fantasy (New Dawning International Bookfair, 2011)

It would seem that Cesare Ancona is a pen name for paranormal romance author Kayden McLeod, or so I gather from the copyright information here. Taking a break from vampires and werewolves, it would seem. I'm not complaining, I'm taking a break from reading the silly things (Laurell K. Hamilton excepted, and those only because I'm hopelessly behind). What this means in practical terms vis-a-vis A Wife's Fantasy is that it was written by a writer, as opposed to someone who decided to slap some words on a page and market them as Kindle porn despite having no experience, or talent, whatsoever. In other words, this is already head and shoulders over about 80% of the Kindle porn extant—which means that you get decent descriptive writing (though I wish a bit of the brand-consciousness had been left out for some more physical details about the characters), some emotional investment that makes the characters easier to identify with, and some attention to those minor details like pace and word choice that the average reader isn't going to notice save subconsciously.

Which is not to say this is perfect writing. There are a few spots of grammatical awkwardness, mostly comma-related, and as with most Kindle porn it could do with a good deal of fleshing out; Selena Kitt this is not, but it's miles above the usual morass. ** ½
