Beach Read by Emily Henry

3.0

I did two things this weekend that I’ve never done before: I logged a book on goodreads that I actually listened to as an audiobook and I “read” an Emily Henry book! I’m not sure if I’ll do either of those things ever again, but it seemed like a good use of time on two 11-hour-long car rides. And I must say that the travel time went by surprisingly fast while listening to this book!

Overall, this book was not my favorite, but I didn’t dislike it either. When it ended, I was sort of ready to be done with it, but I was also happy with how everything turned out. And I can (kind of) see why Emily Henry is so popular. I liked the premise of this story—especially the meta conversation about rom-coms vs. literary fiction—and I felt like the pacing was really good. Also, I found this iteration of the enemies-to-lovers trope to be somewhat believable—as if any of us needs a trope to be believable—so that was a plus. I liked Gus, wasn’t crazy about January tbh, and I found all the other characters to be kind of annoying. I think that if this was a movie, I would probably enjoy it a lot more. And while I generally think audiobooks are strange and don’t technically count as reading, I think it would’ve been hard for me to finish this one if I had actually read it instead of listening to it.

Now, back to my regularly scheduled programming.
