The Illusions by Liz Hyder

4.0

Format: Print

I picked this up on a whim in my local indie bookshop and I’m really glad I did. I really liked the characters (and absolutely loathed one of them) and I think the author did a really good job of giving us all three characters’ stories in a fulfilling way despite the often-shifting POV. I was really interested to learn how a lot of the characters, events etc. were inspired by real-life figures – the author’s research shone through and they brought everything together in a very clever way. Even some of the more ridiculous elements didn’t actually seem it while reading. The ending particularly was so well done. The book read quickly and was an engaging read while travelling the trains this week. I’ll definitely be looking out for more by the author.
