A simple bittersweet and heartwarming story about food and a shared bond between people who've been isolated and mistreated. It's a quiet story about discovering love and depth in the things that we often take for granted such as food. However, it's also a story about understanding. I love how the characters make effort to try and understand each other's circumstances, despite having been mistreated and discriminated against for merely existing. I loved the growing familial relationship between Sentaro and Tokue. Truly the highlight of the book!
