3.0
3.5/5 Stars: ‘Mexican Gothic’ by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
→ Age Range: Adult.
→ Genre: Historical, Mystery Thriller.
→ Trigger Warnings: Incestual Relations, Suicide, Attempted Rape.
In-depth Rating:
→ Plot: ★★★
→ Character Development: ★★★★
→ Setting: ★★★★
→ Entertainment Level: ★★★
→ Writing: ★★★★
General Comments: Fans of Gothic Classics like Rebecca and the Yellow Wall-Paper will be enthralled, as long as you like a heaping dose of all-out horror. It weaves elements of Mexican folklore with themes of sacrifice, rebirth, and decay, casting a dark spell all the way to the visceral finale. The protagonist is no delicate flower, tackling unabashed racism and misogyny; she is bold, and unapologetically witty.
Favourite Quote: ‘A woman who is not liked is a bitch, and a bitch can hardly do anything: all avenues are closed to her.’
Time Read: Five Days.
