I might’ve enjoyed this more if I had read it 20 years ago, it didn’t age the best. There was language in it I didn’t love (specifically about the ‘whore’ in town).
I also feel like the author had a weird relationship with dogs. He referred to them multiple times throughout the story, mostly in reference to them being food or being angry and attacking.
I don’t think any of the women in the story had any sort of agency. They were always characters that had worth because of their relationship with the men (mother, whore, woman in love that is lost to despair without her man).
I did kind of enjoy the disjointed writing style telling about different times in his father’s life. It’s an emotional and introspective sort of book.
