Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me by Mariko Tamaki
2.0
✧ • ° . ◦ *⠀┊ two and a half stars.
⠀i have a lot of mixed feelings about this. i think the art and color palette (aka black, white and pink) was absolutely beautiful. the concepts were great. i think it is important that queer stories are shared but aren’t always happy-go-lucky. it’s important that queer characters go through events that can be representative of real life events. i liked that toxic relationships, spotty events in friendships, abortion, and age of consent/age in relationships were tackled.
⠀however, for the first half of this, i had a hard time following what was going on. i think the layout of both the comic panels and text as well as the lack of information given in the text made it confusing. i found the characters... boring. i just didn’t care about them. the ones i did care (a little) about, hardly showed up.
⠀overall, i just didn’t care about this. i found it hard to care about the story despite liking the elements. i think my expectations were too high, so that is partly on me. this just didn’t do it for me and i really wish i did. because it’s so short, i do think it’s worth the read but you also wouldn’t be missing much.
