A heartbreaking and harrowing though important read being atrocious atrocities to light. To know that appaling treatment of children, especially those of different races, happened and people happily turned a blind eye is disgusting. 
Whitehead is an astounding author writing about these institutions that are now being brought to light. His author's note at the end is also an important bit of the novel.
