The story here is so short you don't even have the time to understand the characters, which are very different from the movie; I couldn't empathize with the ones from the book, they're all annoying, especially Nick. In addition to that, most of the pages are filled with Nick's descriptions of Daisy and Jay, I mean, was it necessary? How about telling the story instead? They take up so much space that all the most important events are condensed into very few final pages in a very confused way; so much you don't even understand

Jay dies.

Could've been so good, disappointed.

La brevità del libro rappresenta un grande ostacolo: si hanno poche pagine per raccontare la storia e delineare i personaggi, e l'autore non ne ha certamente fatto buon uso. 
Le pagine sono riempite dalle descrizioni, completamente inutili, soprattutto di Daisy e Jay dal punto di vista del narratore Nick. Si tratta di descrizioni che delineano non il profilo psicologico dei personaggi, bensì la loro apparenza. 
Gli eventi più importanti, o, se vogliamo, L'evento, viene raccontato in maniera estremamente scialba, non si ha alcuna reazione, così come sul finale non si capisce, per il modo in cui è scritto, che

muore.

Il film invece rende tutto cento volte meglio, le scene sono stupende e lasciano il segno, per non parlare dei personaggi per i quali si può provare simpatia o antipatia (nel libro nessuna delle due tanto sono piatti).
