Leg: The Story of a Limb and the Boy Who Grew from It by Greg Marshall
Did not finish book. Stopped at 41%.
I had been really looking forward to this book so decided to tandem read the physical and audio as Greg himself narrated the audio. The title and the range of topics detailed seemed like this could be an incredibly strong memoir!
I was incredibly disappointed that the author used both the terms ‘bipolar’ and ‘schizophrenic’ inappropriately! And there were several other references to ableism that went unexplored. This book is also absolutely filled with unchecked privilege which did not sit right with me at all. The author’s style of humour was also really not for me and seems to have also been a big miss for other reviewers.
I’d recommend staying away from this memoir and instead seeking out more diverse queer disability narratives such as ‘Sipping Dom Pérignon Through a Straw’, ‘Disability Visibility’ and anything by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha.
