One Day in December by Josie Silver
4.0
Ok ok ok, getting personal here. Sometimes I let my degree get in my head and I tell myself I shouldn't or I can't indulge in "trendy romance" novels. I've spent WEEKS of my life studying the intricacies of the great masterpieces and have a deep appreciation for, what we'll call, "classic" literature. I have an idea that books I read must all reveal some deep seated truth about human nature and the experience...
Well. This book did not do that, or maybe not in an obvious way, but it was really, really, REALLY fun to read. And I mean, really fun. I laughed (a lot -- Silver is damn funny), I cried, I smiled, I cringed, I got angry. ALL OF THE EMOTIONS. In total, I think it took me 1.5 days to finish this book. It was fun and enjoyable, and relatively light hearted compared to my regular reading.
And who knows, maybe this did reveal something about my experience: books don't have to be critically acclaimed to be good and to mean something to you personally. Maybe the beauty of reading is that it does just that - it brings you somewhere else, it entertains you, it provides comfort and solace.
