The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

5.0

I really enjoyed this piece of historical fiction. Set in the Kentucky hills in the late 1930, we follow Cussie Mary, a 'blue' with a heart of gold and deep-seeded conviction. She is one of the first in her homeland to earn the title of "Book Woman," a traveling librarian of sorts whose main job is to bring books to people who live far from town and have little to no access to education.

Life in Troublesome Creek is hard, and the author did a fantastic job not only portraying the situations of so many different families, but has also provided such a realistic window into a piece of history that will draw you in almost instantly. She will get an emotional reaction out of you, one way or another, and there are many types to choose from throughout the course of this book.

I would recommend reading the author's notes at the end of the book once you've finished the novel. Her research into this time period and the people she writes about was extensive, and it shows. I'm now looking forward to checking out what else Kim Michele Richardson has written.
