I’ve seen a lot of complaints about the writing style in this book because every other chapter flashes back to 8 years ago but I actually don’t mind it. I think rather than it all being in chronological order, this way helps you feel what Callie felt back then and helps you understand why things are the way they are in the present.

Another complaint I’ve seen was the immaturity in Callie when it comes to her feelings about the bargainer. No shit, she was a teenage girl when she first encountered him. With no idea what it feels to be loved by anyone or protected for that matter. Of course she’s going to attach herself to someone like him. Scary and fierce but protective. Especially spending that much time with them and all the memories made. New life experiences. Shit maybe it’s the bpd in me but I’d be the same way and you think I would’ve forgot about all that 7 years later? Absolutely not.

So many secrets and intense feelings and uncertainty of what to expect next. I definitely got lost in this book.

The only thing that I didn’t like was glorifying an age gap with a minor like that. There’s no reason that this couldn’t have been written with Callie being at least 18 to begin with.

Aside from that, this is my introduction to fantasy. I wanted to start with something light that I wouldn’t look at be like “wtf am I even reading rn” and this was perfect for that. I’ll definitely be moving on the series.
