It took me a minute to get it, I admit: this book is both the dissertation the narrator stopped AND the novel the narrator started. Before that realization, I thought it was a very very very pretentious, soapboxy novel. 

It's that even possible? Maybe what repels me about the dissertation is it's so individualistic. Something I began thinking about in your class is that writing is fundamentally a social act.
