All in all, quite thought provoking in regards to humanity’s first interactions with extraterrestrial life and what it looks like. The ending makes sense but I can’t say it’s what I wanted nor expected; I expected our team of characters to save the day, not have the solution essentially be “It worked out because *Science*”. There were also some bits that I likened to Jules Verne in his “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” where he was more adamant about showing off his knowledge of marine life as opposed to writing a half-decent plot; only instead of fish and sea mammals, Crichton breaks from the story with “As a renowned biologist once said…” and elaborates on that point to tie it somewhat back to the plot, but it all seems superfluous and like he was just trying to hit the word count.
Moderate: Animal death, Death, Racism, Blood, Medical content, and Pandemic/Epidemic
I used the “Racism” content warning as the author uses the term “Indians” when referring (presumably) to the Native American population.
