City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky

adventurous mysterious reflective slow-paced

4.0

Set in Ilmar, a city under Palleseen occupation, where resistance brews. The occupiers maintain order through groups like the Schools of Correct Speech and Conduct, while dangerous magical forces linger in the Anchorwood.

Ilmar itself feels alive. The story shifts between criminal, academic, and supernatural viewpoints, with standout characters including Blackmane, Lemya, Ruslav, Ivarn Ostravar, and Yasnic.

The pacing drags at times, the world’s depth and character complexity make it rewarding.

While I thoroughly enjoyed it once I got the hang of it, I’ll take a break before diving into Book 2. It’s not something I’ll pick up immediately, but I’ll definitely return to this world when I’m ready for another immersive experience.
