The Autobiography of Malcom X by Malcolm X

4.0

(listened as audiobook)

What's it about?
It's the story of Malcom X's life, from his childhood in a small Michigan town, to his adolesence in Boston, to his time as a small time Harlem and Boston, his time in prison and conversion to the Nation of Islam, his rise to a leadership position in the Nation of Islam and national/global fame, to his break with the Nationa of Islam and conversion to Sunni Islam. It ends in 1965, just before Malcom X is assasinated.

What did I think?
I really liked it. Partly this was due to the great narration. But Malcom X clearly had a very interesting life. A tough childhood, losing first his father then his mother. The descriptions of black streets life in the late 30 and early 40s was interesting. I found the part where Malcom X credited reading in prison for his transformation to resonate with me. It definitely opens doors and minds, and I am glad that Malcom X had the oppportunity to educate himself in prison. It's kind of amazing how many transformations that he went through in his life. Who knows what he might have accomplished if his life hadn't been cut short?
