The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix
3.0
Format: Audio/Print Combined
Having read this book a few years ago and with the sequel sitting on my shelf since its release, it was past time to reread this so that I can actually get to that sequel. I decided to try the immersive experience with this – reading along while listening to the audio – but I’m sorry to say that I didn’t enjoy the book quite so much the second time round. I don’t know if that’s because of the way I was reading or if I just wasn’t as invested in the story as I think I was before.
This is an action-led story which usually works for me, but it did start very slow. I’m also not someone who thinks all world building should be crammed into the start of a book, but because we were learning about the world alongside Susan, this also felt slow, and it was frustrating when there were things I wanted to know but the characters weren’t being forthcoming. Things definitely moved along later in the book, which I appreciated though.
Overall though, this was an enjoyable read (although I do wish there had been more specifically about books/bookselling) and I’m looking forward to picking up the sequel soon.
