If I had a nickel for every book I’ve read in the past few years narrated by a terrifying dog just trying to do the right thing… I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice. In any case, I love Tchaikovsky’s writing style – he’s got a real talent for given unique voices to his characters. Rex’s voice starts off incredibly simple (almost distractingly so), but this is a stylistic choice to match Rex’s almost-distractingly-simple worldview. As the situation gets more complicated and Rex gets forced into ever more ambiguous situations, both Rex’s mindset and his writing style becomes more complex. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to the sequel, which I will be starting immediately.
