The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton by Edith Wharton

5.0

When I read The House of Mirth last year, I immediately stocked up on everything of Wharton's that I could find and throughout this year I've been struggling to choose which one of her books to pick next. It wasn't until October when I found myself craving ghost stories and this book leapt out at me as the obvious choice. It was perfect. Wharton is superb at capturing uncertainty and conjuring haunting imagery, which varies from a pair of eyes watching in the darkness to a man utterly consumed by a dead young woman. It's captivating, beautifully written and deeply unsettling.
