Book Review: As Long as the Lemon Tree Grows by Zoulfa Katouh
Rating: 5/5 stars… for wrecking my heart?
Someone give this author an award, or a cake, or a hug I don’t care, I just want her to know what an incredible book she wrote and what an incredible writer she is.
The story is about a girl surviving amid war, and it reminded of me the dull pain I felt while reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, a masterpiece of the year 2023 and a must-read for every avid reader who likes to cry while reading.
Personally, when I read a book, I don’t only read it, I get sucked into it, I start feeling a huge fraction of the character’s fear, pain, and grief, so books like this leave a scar over my anxious heart. Making me go through the most terrifying roller coaster ride, I felt helpless because I didn’t know what was coming ahead.
And oh what the climax, what a climax! It made me run to my friends to scream at them about it, followed by sending a compliment via telepathy to the author because wow! What a twist, I was traumatized.
Not suitable for people with anxiety disorder, my anxiety level increased while reading, so please make sure to check through the trigger warnings. (It gets very overwhelming)
Bonus: I sent a text to the author immediately after I finished the book (as if she’s my bestie or something, lol) and threw compliments at her, when I found out she too was a bts army I jumped up and down like a baby.
“I won’t let them own my fears.”
