Glad You're Not Here by Adam Sherman
5.0
I have read books about wars, death, spies before. But Its kind of my first true action book after I finished Masoud Rana series (Its a spy series by a Bangladeshi Author, DAMN COOL!!).
Anyways… I was too skeptical about this book. Mainly due to the fact that it got no reviews in GOODREADS!!! I mean!! Come on!! How is it possible?!!!! And as soon as I started to read, I was even more confused!! The author is a splendid narrator!! The story was moving and captivating, then why??!!
Anyways, lets just start with my thoughts >>
1. Characters:
The main protagonist of this book is a boy called Jacobs. Think about a regular average hot headed guy from your college, who has got morals, keeps himself up to date with the world, witty, sarcastic and could hurt people if he have to.. He doesn’t enjoy hurting and he keeps regretting the ones he had to kill or could not simply save.
I have read a lot of books where the characters kill one another. And in very few of them, they remorse. As if killing did not bring any guilt to them!! Which sometimes astonished me a lot.
I loved Jacobs’s character building.. How he changed over his stay, how he understood where he stepped out of a line and how he tried to redeem himself. I can not talk specifically about rest of the characters in fear of spoilers.. But some of they are well developed, and rest are still secret and I hope we will get to know more about them in future books.
This book is a minefield of characters. As all of them are here to be a professional killer, you won’t really expect yourself to be able to sympathize with any of them. But you will eventually.. You will get child solders, para-human, psychopaths, ISIS.. You name it!! All of them with their different background stories that shaped that into what they were..
**Being a Muslim, I found it really hard to stomach all those Al-Qaeda peoples activities, specially forcing someone to be a Muslim. So I though I should add, they have their warped version of ISLAM. ISLAM is not like that. Please don’t judge us Muslims based on some peoples activities..**
2. Plot:
Its the plot that appealed me the most! Think about an institute where bad people from all the countries come to hone their skills to be a better(?!!) killer!! And an average teenage boy is sent by an international law enforcement agency for collecting informations?!! Sounds cool, right?!!
The story really was moving and didn’t drag a bit. There was always some actions to keep the reader turning the page. It does have some horror scenes, (as expected from an action book) so there is a *TRIGGER WARNING* from me. Specially the “Chamber of Horror” made my stomach turn :/
3. Narration:
The narration is full of sarcasm, dry & morbid humor.. In fact, in some really serious conditions you will end up laughing like a lunatic (well.. I did 😛 )
All in all I really enjoyed the book and I really wanted to keep reading. So I contacted with the author to know when the second book will be releasing. From him I got to know that, its actually a “WEBSERIES“!! Its the 1st book, book 2-6 is completed!! And book 7 is still on process… Click Here to check it out!!
