Apparently near death experiences can leave you in a space where you are living in reality but open to the supernatural. Since the accident at the beach, Hilton’s been having dreams, well what he thinks is dreams. Because whatever is happening to him starts flowing over into his consciousness while he’s awake. The encounters, the thoughts, the knowing of things that others don’t. It’s all happening, and throughout the story it keeps him up at night. This causes him to be stressed and angry, and no one believes him. That coupled with the fact that his wife, the only elected African American judge in their county, is receiving death threats from an unknown source.
However, as the story progresses - Hilton’s situations and the letters seem to be connected. And eventually Hilton starts to be clear on what is happening to him and his family!

The representation here is one that I can applaud. Black family, wealthy, and living in a predominately white neighborhood. This story happens to touch on supernatural elements, that could be labeled or thought to be mental instability somewhat, therapy, and racism.
I enjoyed this read. There was always something happening that would pull me in further as the story progressed. Honestly, I’ve never read a book that allowed the reader to see and feel the confusion that the other characters felt as Hilton was experiencing these encounters. I also liked how the author allowed some sense of
knowing and understanding through his daughter, Kaya, when she experienced a dream. I feel it deepened their relationship and helped Hilton not feel so alone in a sense.
I will be reading The Good House by this author very soon!
