A very easy read. Everything flows very nicely and would be good for readers who prefer romance that doesn’t have sex scenes on page.
I was very surprised to see that this book was written in 2017 because it reads like something that was written in 2007. Even keeping Rom-Com rules in mind, the characters of this story are awful.
MC is the girlboss, gaslight, gatekeep poster-child. She says that she’s obsessed with Jane Austen but only refers to P&P and Emma. She also, throughout the book, blames Jane Austen for giving her bad advice but if she had remembered ANY of the takeaways from any of Austen’s books, she would have fared much better.
The love interest has allegedly read all of Jane Austen’s work, which he did in his spare time, and could not see the value in her work. It’s fine if he didn’t like Jane Austen’s work, many people don’t, but to say that you can’t objectively see how her work was groundbreaking for it’s time ? Red flag. Especially when he uses Stephen King as an example of exemplary writing? No. I like Stephen King too but no.
Jane Austen is name dropped in this book only to lure Austen fans into reading this. If you take out all mentions of Jane Austen, you’ll end up with the same story.
People who are houseless are only used to prop up the love interest and show how charitable he is. At one point, the MC and love interest start dancing in a New York soup kitchen and everyone joins in??? It’s very forced and a lame excuse to push the two characters together. Also, this book is very unkind to those who are impoverished and/or struggle with addiction.
Definitely not for me.
