Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh

5.0

Reign of the Fallen was probably my favorite read this year so far. I really enjoyed the unique take on what it means to rule a kingdom, with the Dead continuing to return to power beyond regular laws. There were times that I was a little frustrated with the main character, Odessa, but I think it made her more human in my eyes, which now I really appreciate. The action took off right at the beginning of the book, and even though there were parts that were slower than others, the tension was always present for the overall plot of the book.

**SPOILERS FROM HERE ON:**

I, at first, was frustrated with Odessa for continuing to take the numbing potions after Danial refused to make them for her after he warned her that they were highly addictive. But with an addiction, all you can think about is your next fix, so reflecting on it, it really was just like any other human being addicted to a substance. What I had a problem with afterwards was that Odessa didn't really seem to grief Evander after Meredy and Valoria got her off of the potions and made her addiction cease, but that is also right when the real action started to kick up. I just wish that, for her sake in all she went through with the potions, that she could have had some time to actually grief undrugged.

I had Hadrien pegged as someone to watch for when he had asked Odessa to dance with him at his birthday party, but I wasn't quite sure how it would come into play. I really liked the way the story played out with him being the villain. He just wanted change for his people, but went about it in such a conniving way that it was kind of fun to see his drastic change from the beginning of the story. I also liked that Lyda Crowther played more of a part than just Evander's mother, that she was in on the whole thing and she was just as evil as Hadrien was.

I'm still digesting all of my feelings for this book, and it's making me love it that much more! I can't wait to see where the next book will lead Odessa and Meredy, and if the rest of the characters in the first story will make an appearance in book two!
