Bury Your Gays by Chuck Tingle

2.0

Chuck Tingle’s “Bury Your Gays” is a queer mystery novel that starts with an intriguing concept: Misha, a Hollywood scriptwriter who’s been crafting queer narratives for years, suddenly finds his life upended when the horror characters he created come to life. This chaos is triggered by an experimental new algorithm, thrusting Misha and his loved ones into a terrifying spiral as the technology runs amok.

While the premise initially drew me in, I found myself disappointed. Although I fully expected a fictional story, the book struggled to maintain a balance between the outlandish and the plausible. At times, it felt like it wanted to explore real-world possibilities, but then veered so far into the absurd that it became hard to stay grounded in the story.

The writing style didn’t resonate with me either—it felt disorganized, which only added to the overall chaos of the plot. Misha, as the central character, lacked the depth needed to make him relatable. By the end of the book, I found myself indifferent to his fate. In fact, there were moments when I was almost rooting for him to meet the same grim end as his characters.

Though Bury Your Gays has garnered positive feedback on Goodreads, it wasn’t my cup of tea. If you’re considering it, I’d suggest giving it a pass unless the concept truly captivates you.
