Lie with Me by Philippe Besson

3.0

This gay literary fiction is in constant comparison with Call Me By Your Name, a novel I truly devoured and loved, so I decided to pick it up. Although I liked the story in general, the poignancy of the writing—in which I have to point out that sometimes was jarring and stilted because of translation issues—in the end, I felt lukewarm with a tad of disappointment. Despite the likeable characters, their relationship in the past and how it affected their present lives, I didn't feel the same sense of longing, tension, and most of all attachment, which in my opinion were the strongest assets of CMBYN. Perhaps it was because of its short length and the way the present and past interwove with one another. I did like the plot twist though.
