Goth: A History by Lol Tolhurst

3.0

3.5 stars.

I suggest that if goth music or 80s music is interesting to you at all, you give this a try. You’ll at worst, learn about the story of some cool ass bands and get some new ones to listen to.

The issue I have with this, though, is that Tolhurst centers himself in the history. If you’re a big Cure fan, that is a selling point. If you’re not? Then you’ll have some frustrating moments like I did, where you wanted Tolhurst to get out of the way so you can hear the stories of goth music without centering himself.

I also wanted more of how goth music expanded into other genres the way that Tolhurst explains how goth music spun out of punk and post-Punk music.

I really liked how Tolhurst went back to the deep roots of goth music and how it connects with gothic and romantic literature and film. That’s really cool and really interesting!
