A soft queer romance with just enough historical accuracy to give it an edge. The story of jaded, grumpy Nick and sunshine-bright, scatterbrained Andy, is happy and hopeful despite all the things working against them. Two inseparable friends stumbling through the difficulties of understanding and conveying their feelings for one another. (Plus what can I say, I am a sucker for a nice sprinkling of ‘Bi Panic.’) Nick and Andy’s romance is at the heart of the book, but there’s also an emphasis on family – found and biological – who show Nick and Andy that they’re loved, no matter what. Set against the backdrop of changing culture in the late 50s/early 60s, Cat Sebastien explores queer culture, the dangers of gay bar raids, the constant fear of someone finding out and reporting, and the wonders of found community at the time. A timely book considering it's about the news cycle and queer people existing and finding their communities even in a climate that does not accept them. WE COULD BE SO GOOD is a great read for those who love a fumbling romance with loveable characters and a bit of tension. If you enjoyed LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB or THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO, definitely add this to your TBR pile.
