Eloquence of the Sardine: Extraordinary Encounters Beneath the Sea by Bill François
5.0
I am a huge sucker for books that combine striking covers with quirky titles. I generally tend to pick these books up without really paying much attention to what they are actually about. I figure, if the author has gone through the effort of creating a captivating title and the design for the book cover has also been given thoughtful intent, it just has to be interesting. These are also books that I probably would never have chosen to read otherwise, which would have been a missed opportunity to read some exceptional books. This one did not disappoint.
“Eloquence of the Sardine”
While I have never given much thought to Sardines, I have certainly never associated them with being eloquent. Until now:
“A sardine is a perfect mirror, reflecting homogeneously from all angles. It is capable of blending completely into the universe it reflects off its skin. No eye can distinguish the sea itself from its reflection on a sardine.”
“Eloquence of the Sardine” is so much more than a book about Sardines though. Rather, it is a collection of stories, scientific discoveries, folklore and legend of oceanic life and, as the subtitle states, “Extraordinary Encounters Beneath the Sea”.
Bill François writes with such eloquence that you can feel yourself getting swept away on a current of words and find yourself swimming along with the dolphins, whales or bluefin tuna. You want to listen to what these animals have to say. Learn their stories and their secrets, which is exactly what Bill François helps you to do. There are so many details about the lives living in this underwater world that are quite astounding. Whales who communicate over thousands of miles of ocean and that bluefin tuna are warm blooded creatures.
Needless to say, but I’ll say it anyway, I adored everything about this book. It’s one of those books where you begin highlighting phrases, then sentences to entire paragraphs and, finally, have to give up because all of the words are lovely.
“In which our world is reflected in the sea, which is a reflection of our world, which is a reflection of the sea…
In which the sea is reflected in our world, which is a reflection of the sea, which is a reflection of our world …”
