Roanhorse' pandemic book: a novella about demons and angels in the 19th-century American west. A half-demon croupier tries to save her sister, which involves several deals with actual devils, and a lot of trying not to get dead as she navigates mining town politics. The book is a solid 70% atmosphere, with some great macabre images like mining the body of a fallen demon lord to extract a magical substance from his bones, ash blowing across the towns bacchanalia, white-clad soldiers of heaven with blood streaking their masks. Bit of a Good Omens vibe, but much more lived in and grimy.

It's a complete story in and of itself (we find out who done it, and everyone ends up in a new place at the end), but felt maybe a little thin or rushed. I'd have liked a whole novel to really sink my teeth into the world. I do like Roanhorse's ability to write a heroine who is a total dick, simultaneously showing how she got that way, and not softening or excusing her. (I have trouble with a lot of urban fantasy because the heroine is set up as hardass and unlikeable, then is consistently kind to old ladies and always does the right thing in the end. Not so here!) I'm a little less into her sad bad boy love interests, but it was less obnoxious than it could be here.

Hope Roanhorse does something else in this universe (after she finishes Between Earth and Sky).
