Whispers in the Dark by Delilah Croww, Delilah Croww

3.0

It’s an interesting story. the beginning really lured me in with questions like “is it a hallucination, paranormal things, or stalker?” the story follows Alice who had to move to a spooky manor after her mother married her creepy stepfather. since her arrival, she began to see, feel, and hear things that everyone around her, including her shrink thinks aren’t real.

before I go in any further, I understand that there are lots of teenagers who are quite rational and responsible. but, for some others (me included. yes I’m unashamedly admitting it), most of the time our teenage brain is driven by our teenage hormones, worsen by certain upbringing and social pressure. I think the author did a good job at translating that in this book. the way most of the characters in the book think and behave can make them feel so unlikeable. but again, it’s a book about 18 year olds high school seniors, adult on paper yes, but still very much teenagers. This is not an excuse for the bullying and SA done by some characters, that’s just wrong period. But, if you decide to read this book, just keep that in mind; the FMC and MMC are 18 year olds in modern time.

I genuinely like the overal concept. The spicy scenes are quite good as well. Overlooking the typos and formatting errors, it just feels like it’s missing a few somethings. The pacing and how the story unravels are also feel a bit inconsistent. It feels like there are a lot of things happening and clues scattered in the beginning and the end, but nothing really happens in the middle, just mundane teenagers day to day life.

Considering Alice’s curious and determined nature, I find it odd that she didn’t seek out the truth about the voices in the walls or the mystery guy who keep appearing out of nowhere, did all these things to her, and even ‘took care’ of people who wronged her.

I would’ve rated it higher if there were more of MMC’s backstory and Alice’s flashback to her first few years in the house hearing and seeing things that no one else did. That would’ve played out well as clues as well in terms of trying to decipher who the mystery guy is.

As for side characters, I love Wilfred and Ivy! I just knew Wilfred played deeper role and I’m glad that I got that right. Ivy is such a girl’s girl. I adore her ethics and personality in this book and so excited to read her story in the next book!

Overall, it’s an interesting story to read as long as you keep in mind that the characters are 18 year olds. The ending left me with questions and I hope more things will be cleared up in the next book. Tbh the last chapter is really confusing. But, maybe it’s the author’s intention, idk.

I received a free copy to review, but I’d like to point out that I’m leaving a review with all honesty and voluntarily.
