The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black

2.0

Final review:
Now that I got some sleep, I will try to properly review this book

The bad bits
1. The chemistry is non-existent.
It had so much potential. One beautiful charming male (the face) and a shadowy strong female (the shadow). [b:Six of Crows|23437156|Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1)|Leigh Bardugo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1651710803l/23437156._SY75_.jpg|42077459] meets [b:Darkfever|112750|Darkfever (Fever, #1)|Karen Marie Moning|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1392579949l/112750._SY75_.jpg|108558]. Two distinct morally gray characters. The story writes itself. But, nope, both of them never got the opportunity to grow into themselves, to complement each other, to fight for each other. In the end, they had absolutely no personality of their own. I think [a:Holly Black|25422|Holly Black|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1589911274p2/25422.jpg] was too afraid to make her characters truly unlikable. A pity.

2. The pacing.
It is unnecessarily long in the beginning and too fast towards the end. The climax bombed. This brings me to the next point,

3. The snake.
What even was that?

4. Taryn.
I am convinced that the only reason she helps Jude is that she craves power. If Jude was a maid, she would have picked on her to make herself more fae. She is a manipulative selfish woman, and Jude, the High Queen does not see that? Wtf?

5. Cardan X Oak.
A huge missed opportunity.

6. The writing
Clearly, Holly Black's descriptive style doesn't suit my taste.

The good bits
1. The previous book was extremely good.
The only reason I read this one is because of the previous one.

2. It gave Jude and Cardan some dimension.
Did I like that they didn't have distinct personalities? No. But, the characters did evolve.

Update:
Apart from the snake bit, it was a good-ish story. The reptile came out of nowhere. It cheapened the story for me and made the ending predictable

Update:
The big plot twist wasn't much of a plot twist. Every single person who read the last book knew it in a second. I'm disappointed in Jude.

When will Taryn kindly fuck off and die in a hole? Every time she opens her mouth, I want to punch her. The 'I didn't know, 'I just did what Dad said!', 'Locke asked me to' are getting old.

ā€œIā€™m not a bad person.ā€ - Taryn. LOL.
