Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson
4.0
At least, after two years, I have finished this book.
The good: the utter absence of love triangle bullshit. I love Adolin supporting Kaladin.
I enjoyed Adolin's sections a lot, it fits him far better to be defined by his optimism and honor than by his choice to murder a guy, which never made sense for him. While predictable, the payoff with Maya was satisfying.
I enjoyed Navani's sections as well, understanding the magic of the world as she does was for me a nice way to get to the point of everyone having the weapons they need with less Infodumping than there could have been, the sections did drag a bit and were kind of repetitive
Kaladin's conflict with his father over what is the right way to do the most amount of good was also well-written and well-integrated and I liked the payoff of Kaladin's angst.
I also really enjoyed Rlain in this book. Hope we get more of him and his ambivalent perspective on it all.
The meh: the drag on both Kaladin and Shallan's plots. Like, I get it, they're both super fucked up, but a lot of their sections towards the middle were just reiterating that over and over with the vague threat that something might happen sometime.
Everything Dalinar and Jasnah. I don't really like that Jasnah survived, it kinda lowered the stakes for me, and all of her bits are just about how awesome and smart she is. Dalinar feels like he was just kinda removed from the plot except for when he needed to save Kaladin's ass right up until the very end.
The bad: Not a fan of Venli sections. Dull, repetitive and way too much self-flagellation. Also Taravangian. I do not like that guy and I wish we didn't have to have more of him.
