Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design by Charles Montgomery

4.0

An easy-to-digest exploration of factors and interventions that can make cities happy and healthy places to live – without wrecking the planet. The author manages to present the complexities of urban design in a highly accessible way by showing how interconnected they are with human well-being and sustainability. Even though some of the initial scientific and philosophical arguments are rather simplistic, the later chapters offer a more nuanced view of urban planning challenges and competing interests. My main complaint about this otherwise informative and enjoyable book is that most of the discussions and statistics are US-focused even though several case studies originate in European cities and other continents.
