The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
5.0
This is a story about a little girl who longs for beauty. A black girl who wants blue eyes so badly she will do anything. But deep down it is about the world that created her and destroyed her because she didn’t fit the mold, the standard of beauty and whiteness.
I’m incredibly moved by this book. It was nothing like I expected yet Toni Morrison held me in with her prose that feels like poetry. Rich with pain and trauma and brimming with the beauty of childhood, this book will stay with you for a while.
I want to revisit this down the line. I need to read more of Morrison’s books and soak them in. She is easily one of the greats of fictions if this was her debut.
