A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid

5.0

this book is INCREDIBLE!!!!

Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales, specifically the Fairy King, who has haunted her since her childhood. Effy has always been isolated and different, only able to find comfort in Emrys Myrddin’s epic fairy tale, ‘Angharad’. ‘Angharad’ tells the story of a young girl who falls in love with the Fairy King and then destroys him.

When the estate of the late Emrys Myrddin announces a contest for the chance to redesign the iconic house, Effy leaps at the opportunity. But the Manor is old and nearing its demise. When Effy arrives there, she realises she’s not the only college student staying at Hiraeth Manor. Enter Preston Héloury, a literature student who is seeking to prove that Myrddin is not the true author of ‘Angharad’.

These two rivals must join together to investigate the legacy of Emrys Myrddin. They must fight evil forces and true magic to save themselves from ruination.

This novel is a true love letter to fairy tales and literature. I have not read a book with as beautifully haunting a setting as this in a long, long time. Ava Reid’s command of rich imagery and extensive world-building is incredible and I enjoyed every minute of this story.

ALSO THE ROMANCE!?!?!?! Preston may be one of my favourite book-boyfriends EVER!
