Because of Jenny by Brad Neaton
4.0
Less than 1 month ago someone DM-ed me on my bookstragram, offering his book in exchange of an honest review. As the plot sounded promising, I accepted!
The book was not at all enjoyable! Don't get me wrong.. It was not enjoyable cause it's not supposed to be!
The whole story is described by two POV's. One is from Eric, another is from Jenny. Eric has severe case of depression, whereas Jenny is a heroine addict. We get to know how someone with severe depression fights every single day to survive.. How sometimes even the brightest day feels like a mockery to them, just because their brain says so. We get to know how sometimes addiction is not something people choose consciously, sometimes it happens. Sometimes people fight to escape the addiction, only to come back right into it. And it's not their fault.
"Beneath that addict, under that dirty and unkempt exterior, is someone who at some point in life wanted to forget something so badly that they were willing to do just about anything. I think it’s interesting that the drug problem today is mostly people using downers – opiates, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, antihistamines, and the like.
Nobody’s looking to make things more fun or intense, they’re looking for a way out, a way to escape it all. Pain, heartache, loneliness, guilt, shame, sorrow – we all experience these differently, and the degree to which they affect each of us depends in large part not on our ability to cope but on the severity of the issue. Every life unfolds the same: through moments...."
The whole story is dark. Its sad. It's lonely. But it's also highly enlightening. I had so many misconceptions about addictions, most of us have! The book really made me see things that I was too ignorant to see or feel. One thing is clear, the author really did a lot of study on this topic..
"Depression isn't necessarily the evolved product of an unhappy life, either. For me, depression was kind of like a voice deep within me, a voice that was forever trying to convince me of my own inadequacy and insufficiency, urging me to take action against myself."
The story concluded in a positive note though. I know it's quite impossible to find a positive note in those kinds of situation in which Eric and Jenny were stuck, so its kind of their own fairy tale. I would urge everyone to give this book a chance, if not anything, you might find some empathy toward other people.
My rating for this book is 4 stars!
**Some of you might find the book is quite monotonous in couple of places, I felt that too.. But I guess thats a given as the whole book is described by someone with suicidal thoughts, depression and addiction.
