The Devil's Half Mile by Paddy Hirsch
4.0
The historical and the fictional are brought together in a seamless way by Hirsch in this novel. The plot sucks you in, and the major aspects of the mystery not only shock but realistically fit into an alternate history of the United States. The main character, while often seeming to be almost too infallible, is the anchor that holds every detail together. Yet what appealed to me the most while reading was the supporting female characters; they actually play a part in the various plot lines, rather than relying on the male characters for direction (though they still left me wanting more). The mystery had some steps that were easy to guess, but when Hirsch threw in twists he truly threw in twists. I cannot wait to recommend this book to all my history-loving and my mystery-loving friends, it definitely sucked me in and made my history-degree holding heart very happy.
