Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry by Joya Goffney
4.0
Trigger Warning: Racism, Blackmail, Gender Issues and Cyber Bullying.
It’s a wonder; that just when I reach my third decade is EXACTLY when I start enjoying the coming of age, emotional and at times fluffy YA Romances
Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry is just one of those cute, fluffy yet somehow quite an impactful coming of age young adult romance that I would definitely recommend.
Quinn, a black girl in a predominantly white private school, like all the high schoolers, is full of anxiety and yet little hope. There’s a reason for that - her parents and all her classmates think that she is going to Columbia University, when she in fact forged her letter of acceptance. She isn’t talking to one of her best friends after an incident at a party. And she is in love with her other best friend.
So what does she do to handle the anxiety from all this? She writes in her faithful journal; making lists of.. well everything.
But when Carter, a fellow black classmate makes her face her some very uncomfortable truths about not only herself, but her privilege as well; it is something that she can’t ignore. Especially when her personal journal, the one that was last seen in the custody of Carter, is being used to blackmail her.
Not knowing whom to trust, it is Carter she turns to - to solve the mystery of who has her journal. But while they solve that, Quinn also finds herself on a journey to understand herself far better, accepting her and other’s flaws and most importantly, not just owning up to her mistakes but also understanding the reasons as why she took the decisions she did.
Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry is a relevant read, no matter what the reader’s age, and is a wonderfully character driven novel that will have you reminiscing the moment you close the book.
P.S. I listened to the audio book on Storytel India (click on the link to take you to an amazing offer!) and if you are an audiobook fan, I suggest going this route to reading the book - the narrative highly helped in experiencing the book itself!
