Reread this in 2024 to run at book club at the library I work at in Alberta and we had the most lively discussion. The reread really made me appreciate some of the subtle humour and Kate’s struggle with reconciling her experiences in the oil sands. The book club I run had the most lively discussion with some participants having first hand experience of the camps or of working similarly male dominated fields. Some of my participants were questioning why Katie chose to stay in such a tough situation or to suggest her sister & friend join her after her experiences. Perhaps the creation of the memoir was trying to find an answer to that question so many years later?
