The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
3.5
The descriptions and creativity in War of the Worlds is incredible. The short pages completely lend itself to a fast paced, action packed first person recount of the Martians invading. Capturing the terror seeing something so alien, and the way the movement of the machines are described, it’s a classic that I would highly recommend to anyone trying to add to their well known shelves and get some big names under their belt. Personally the tension was handled perfectly.
“They moved, as it seemed to us, upon a cloud, for a milky mist covered the fields and rose to a third of their height” (p. 56) - just picturing those towering forms like this, lurking in the distance as behind towered rooftops as the brother looks out of his attic window. It is a detail heavy story, and focuses on the process of an alien invasion more so than specific character developments, a tale of survival that spirals and gives us a deep understanding of the rabbits view into chaos of being hunted and lost in an unknown trap of Martian creation. I likely won’t be reading it again, but I did enjoy the imagery, and will have a newfound appreciation for the film.
