Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
5.0
5/5 stars — a new post-apocalyptic favorite
Rebecca Roanhorse's world and characters are a study in contrasts: bleakness and hope; the magical and the mundane; camaraderie and brutality.
Maggie, the main character of Trail of Lightning, hunts monsters within the walls that protect Dinétah from the drowned world outside. She fears herself nearly as much as the monsters; a brush with death awakened powers that allow her to stand on equal footing with supernatural horrors, but also led her to question whether she is irrevocably marked by violence. She reluctantly teams up with Kai, a silver-tongued medicine man, to search for the source of a new kind of creature.
This action-packed novel will be a hit with anyone who enjoys dystopian themes. I'd recommend it to zombie-genre lovers as well, even if these supernatural monsters aren't quite the same. Trail of Lightning was a unique and wonderful book that I devoured in less than a day.
